About
Lewis Warburg Inc. (together with its principals and predecessors, “Lewis Warburg” or “LW”) is an asset management firm operating a family office and multi-strategy hedge fund. For more than 20 years, Lewis Warburg has been actively engaged in the asset management business. They have invested in a number of asset classes throughout the United States and overseas, using a variety of investment strategies.
Lewis Warburg uses a multi-strategy approach to achieve diversification across investment styles and asset classes. Through the decades, these strategies have included: Private Equity (real estate, financial services, logistics, infrastructure, and agribusiness); Active Value (including successful hostile proxy contests); Executive/Operational Management and Consulting (public companies, turnaround situations, project development and start-ups); Merger Arbitrage; Statistical Arbitrage; Distressed Securities; Start-up Enterprises; and Quantitative Algorithms. Depending upon the particular funding or expertise needed, Lewis Warburg may act alone or partner with others on specific investment opportunities. They prefer partners that can bring both expertise and financial support to the specific project; always seeking a team approach where the sum is greater than its component parts. |
Early Success
Lewis Warburg’s early years and investment strategies were quite successful. Five year audited performance returns exceeded 50% per annum, placing their performance among the elite within the industry. Investment decisions were driven by fundamental analysis, consisting exclusively of publicly traded securities, using proprietary: active value, merger arbitrage and distressed debt strategies. Difficult Years The following years proved difficult. A series of personal challenges and distractions, combined with over-leverage, lack of diversification, and a difficult investment environment, led to poor investment results. With less public market opportunities available for value investors, LW investment activities consisted primarily of: distressed debt, private equity and project development opportunities. Exceptional Performance Returns In recent years, Lewis Warburg has again achieved exceptional returns. With annual investment returns exceeding 25% and Sharpe ratios exceeding 2.5, Lewis Warburg’s recent performance again places it among the investment industry’s top performers. The strategies deployed by Lewis Warburg can be grouped into two broad categories: quantitative strategies and fundamental strategies . |
